ALSTOM Director, Nick Otter, is awarded the OBE

Nick Otter, Director of Technology and
External Affairs at ALSTOM�s Technology Centre in
Whetstone, Leicester, UK, has been awarded the OBE in the
Queen�s New Year Honours for `Services to the UK
Energy Industry`. This prestigious award recognises the
significant contribution Nick has made whilst working with
the UK Government in setting the future strategy for Energy
within the UK. 

Nick�s role at ALSTOM includes
understanding future market needs and the impact of global
environmental and energy issues, as well as ensuring that the
technology strategy of the Company is consistent and aligned
with those of Europe and the national countries in which the
Company has a presence. 

In this respect, he has taken a highly active
role in the Advanced Power Generation initiative within the
UK Foresight Process, chairing and participating in the
industry-led Task Forces addressing future UK requirements in
the Power Generation sector. Vice-Chairman of the Foresight
Energy and Natural Environment Panel, Nick has led the
associated Zero Emission Power Generation initiative and has
been involved in political briefings of senior politicians,
including to Ministerial and House of Commons Select
Committee level. 

Currently Nick is an adviser to the Science
and Technology Select Committee Inquiry into UK Low Carbon
Energy R&D and has just returned from leading a DTI UK
Industry Mission to USA and Canada on Carbon Dioxide Capture
and Storage. He is also on the advisory board of the recently
established Tyndall Centre on Climate Change, a major
multidisciplinary initiative supported by the UK Research
Councils. 

Other activities include being a member of the
European Commission External Advisory Group on Non-Nuclear
Energy (NNE), helping to establish and direct the priorities
for the EC Framework Research Programmes FP5 and 6. Nick is
also chairman of the EC Energy Working Group, made up of
representatives from NNE, Nuclear Fission, Nuclear Fusion and
the Environment, addressing the Energy Research Strategy for
Europe up to 2050. The work involves regular briefings of
European Commission Officials and Parliamentarians on future
research and development requirements and programmes in the
field of Energy, and participating on strategic energy
missions to China, India, South Africa, USA and Japan.
