Following the
announcement of Lord Weinstocks death yesterday,
Pierre Bilger, Chairman and CEO of ALSTOM, paid a warm
tribute to the former Chairman of GEC.

Lord Weinstock, who
died aged 77, was pivotal in creating in 1989 the joint
venture company, GEC ALSTHOM, from which ALSTOM was
born.

Mr Bilger regrets the
loss of one of the great industrialists of modern
times:

"Lord Weinstock
created in GEC one of the strongest companies in British
industry." he said. "When GEC ALSTHOM was formed, it merged
the financial strengths of GEC, which were the hallmark of
Lord Weinstock, with the marketing strengths of ALSTHOM and
the joint venture was an undoubted success so much so
that we were able to float the company and rename it
ALSTOM.

Paul Barron,
ALSTOMs UK President who, as a young GEC manager, had
personal experience of working under the Lord Weinstock
regime, said:"He was a unique man with an exceptional
understanding of business and the need for financial strength
and control. He was totally demanding and relentless in his
drive for ever improving results, but those who had the
privilege of working for him learned an invaluable lesson in
how to run a successful business and are still benefiting
from those skills today"
