The first phase of the supply contract includes 37 trains: 24
for Trenitalia (14 EMUs and 10 DMUs); 6 DMUs for the Province of
Trento (located in the Trentino Alto Adige region); 4 EMUs for
the Province of Arezzo (in the Tuscany region) and 3 EMUs for the
Province of Salerno (in the Campania region).

This first firm contract comes within the framework of an
overall six-year investment programme by Ferrovie dello Stato Spa
which includes further options and has a total worth of 650
million euros. This program foresees the acquisition of up to 200
new ALSTOM trains from the
CORADIA
product family (110 EMUs and 90 DMUs).

With external and interior design by Giugiaro Design, these
new trains are developed to meet the growing needs of regional
mobility, which counts passenger comfort among its essential
aspects. In keeping with this objective, low floors will allow
easy access for baby strollers and for passengers with reduced
mobility; passenger cars and driver cabs will be equipped with
air conditioning and each of the 3-car trains will include a
multifunctional area for the transport of bicycles, skis and
luggage. In addition, each car will be equipped with a video
control system, a passenger information system and power supply
sockets for passenger appliances such as portable computers,
personal entertainment devices or mobile phones.

Each train will be capable of transporting up to 345
passengers at a maximum speed of 160km/h for the EMU version and
130km/h for the DMU version.

The new regional train will be produced in ALSTOMs
units in
Savigliano
(Italy) and
Salzgitter
(Germany). Delivery of the first 37 trains is scheduled for
2004.

Emilio Gallocchio, Senior Vice President of ALSTOM Transport
in Italy said: 'This train will rely on state-of-the-art
technologies to satisfy the most demanding passengers in terms of
comfort, low ambient noise and on-board services. It will make
commuting from home to work or to school a real pleasure.'

With more than 35 product lines and a presence in over 60
countries, ALSTOM Transport offers cutting-edge products and
services to four distinct types of customers: urban transit
authorities and operators; intercity passenger rail operators and
rolling stock owners; rail freight operators; and intercity
railway infrastructure owners. ALSTOM Transport, with 4.4 billion
euros in sales in 2001, is one of the worlds leading
suppliers in the railway supply industry.
