The 43 million-euro order is part of a major upgrading and
development program being undertaken by FTM, which transports
approximately 2 million commuters and tourists annually along its
56 km line.

FTM is planning to add a further 10 kilometers of track to
extend the line to the popular Marilleva ski resort in the
Italian Alps by the end of 2002. A seven-kilometers extension to
Fucine in Alta Valle di Sole is also in the planning stage. The
new fleet supplied by ALSTOM will be the first in Italy with a
low floor (300mm floor height). The absence of entry-way
obstacles will permit easy access for baby strollers, passengers
with reduced mobility and passengers carrying skis.

The
new electric trains
will be composed of two cars and have a
total length of 40 meters. Each train is bi-directional and will
be able to transport up to 244 passengers at a maximum speed of
120 km/h.

Great attention will be given to passenger comfort and to
interior and exterior design: large windows for maximum
visibility will allow passengers to enjoy the natural beauties of
the Trentino region; the train will be equipped with an air
conditioning and heating system that will supplement the
floor-integrated heating system to suit the Alpine area in which
the trains will operate.

ALSTOM will also equip the new trains with a noise-reduction
system already in use on Italy’s
PENDOLINO
high speed trains
built by ALSTOM in
Savigliano.

Delivery of the prototype for tests on the track is scheduled
for March 2004 and delivery of the first train is planned for the
end of 2004.

Emilio Gallocchio, Senior Vice President of ALSTOM Transport
in Italy said, '
We are proud to collaborate with Trento Malé to deliver
to the Trentino Region an innovative train completely in line
with the needs of European travelers.
'

ALSTOM Transport, with a worldwide market share of 17 % and
annual sales of € 4.4 billion, is an internationally
leading supplier of rolling stock, signaling systems, services
and complete turnkey systems to the rail industry.
