ALSTOM has been selected by FS (Trenitalia), the Italian State Railways, for the supply of up to 200 new trains for their regional lines (110 trains with electric traction and 90 trains with diesel traction). The project, comprising a first-phase firm contract and further options, has a total value of 650 million euros and falls within the framework of a six-year investment programme by FS.

Under the first-phase firm contract, worth 115 million euros, ALSTOM will supply 36 trains: 24 for Trenitalia (14 Electrical Multiple Units and 10 Diesel Multiple Units), 6 Diesel Multiple Units for Trento self-governing province, 4 Electrical Multiple Units for Arezzo province and 2 Electrical Multiple Units for Salerno province.

These articulated 3-car train-sets are designed with full low floors, permitting easy access for disabled persons. The electric version will operate at a maximum speed of 160 Km/h and the diesel version at 130 Km/h. The car interiors will be air-conditioned and will feature a multi-functional area.

The contract will be carried out by ALSTOM Ferroviaria, based in Savigliano, Italy, and ALSTOM facilities in Salzgitter, Germany. Deliveries will begin in 2003. The first 30 trains will be delivered within 38 months.

Michel Moreau, ALSTOM Transport President declared, 'I am delighted by this order, the first important success of ALSTOM Ferroviaria in Italy since we acquired a majority stake in FIAT Ferroviaria. It is outstanding proof of our capacity to implement the synergies we expected from this acquisition to better serve our Italian clients.'

ALSTOM is the global specialist in energy and transport infrastructure.
