ALSTOM has signed a contract valued at the equivalent of 130
million euros with Metro SA, the operator of the metro of
Santiago (Chile), for the supply of rolling stock intended to
strengthen the existing fleet.
For the contract, ALSTOM will supply a total of 92 cars (10
x 8-car trains, a 7-car trainset, and five trailer cars to be
added to existing trainsets). The order includes the
maintenance of the new trainsets for two years. The new trains
will use the latest technology, including Agate MediaTM,
ALSTOM's passenger information system. The vehicles are
designed with walkthrough gangways, which allow passengers to
circulate freely throughout the train.
The new vehicles will allow the customer to cope with rising
passenger traffic and to meet the needs linked to the extension
of the Lines 5 and 2 of the Santiago metro.
First deliveries are scheduled for spring 2002 and will
continue at a rate of one train per month.
This contract is a follow-on to the order placed by Metro SA
in 1997, which was for 6 x 7-car trainsets. This new success
confirms ALSTOM's position in Chile as the premier supplier for
urban transport, and will bring to more than 530, the number of
vehicles supplied by the Company to the Santiago metro since
1978. In Latin America, ALSTOM also supplies the metros for the
cities of Caracas (Venezuela), Fortaleza, Sao Paulo, Rio and
Brasilia (Brazil), Mexico City (Mexico), and Buenos Aires
(Argentina).
ALSTOM is the global specialist in energy and transport
infrastructure. The company serves the energy market through
