ALSTOM has been awarded a contract worth 650 million euros
for the construction of a coal-fired power plant in Ho-Ping,
south-east of Taipei in Taiwan. The contract - one of the first
private initiatives in independent power production in Taiwan -
was signed today in Hong Kong with the independent power
producer, Ho-Ping Power Company-HPC*.

The power station will comprise 2 x 660 MW units designed to
ensure efficient and economic power production with one of the
lowest emission levels in the world. ALSTOM will be responsible
for the design, supply, erection and commissioning of the
plant, including the civil engineering. The project team will
be based in Knutsford, UK. ALSTOM will supply all major
components, including boilers, steam turbines, generators,
electrics and controls.

The Ho-Ping plant is designed to meet stringent emissions
requirements and will incorporate the most advanced
environmental protection technology. This will include a fully
covered coal storage area, flue gas desulphurisation and
selective catalytic NOx reduction equipment. Substantial
by-products from the power station will be used within the
adjacent cement works being constructed by Taiwan Cement
Corporation (TCC).

Construction work on the plant starts in January 1999 and
its commercial operation is scheduled in 2002. It will be built
on a fast-track programme similar to that implemented
successfully for the construction of the Sual power station (2
x 600 MW), now nearing completion in the Philippines.
