With its innovative construction principles, Cairo will benefit from the Innovia™ monorail 300 system’s slender unobtrusive guideways that allow easy integration into existing urban infrastructure. The Innovia™ 300 monorail system allows fast construction of high-capacity lines at lower costs. The two Cairo lines will each be able to transport 45,000 passengers per hour in each direction when complete.
In August 2019, an Alstom-led consortium also involving Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors signed a €2.7bn contract to design, construct, operate and maintain the two lines. The project includes a 57km line connecting the New Administrative City with East of Nile and a second 42km line connecting West of Nile with Giza. After the construction phase is completed, the Alstom-led consortium will provide 30 years of operation and maintenance (O&M) services for both lines.
The first four-car Alstom Innovia™ 300 unit for the Cairo Monorail project has been completed at Alstom’s Derby, UK factory. The Innovia™ 300 monorail system is equipped with Alstom’s proven Cityflo™ 650 communications-based train control solution. Benefits of this flagship technology include high reliability, flexible operations, shorter headways between trains, improved safety and reduced maintenance costs.
A reveal event was held in Derby to celebrate this key milestone within the project, and it was a real pleasure to have His Excellency Kamel El Wazir, Egyptian Minister for Transport, attend the event to mark this significant milestone in the Cairo Monorail project.
The first two Innovia 300 monorail trains for the Cairo Monorail project have arrived in Cairo after being completed at Alstom’s Derby UK factory, with propulsion systems application led by Alstom’s site in Trapaga, Spain. The dispatch of the first 8 fully automated, driverless cars out of 70 trains (a total of 280 cars) is a major milestone in the Cairo Monorail project. After the construction phase is completed, the Alstom-led consortium will provide 30 years of operation and maintenance (O&M) services for both lines.
The first Monorail was displayed by Egypt's Ministry of Transport for Cairo's residents and citizens on the occasion of the 6th of October celebrations.
In November 2022, the Innovia 300 monorail train successfully completed its trial run from the New Capital City depot to station 22. Once completed, the two Cairo monorail lines will offer new and needed transport options to key areas in Greater Cairo, especially the New Administrative Capital City.
