A world leader supporting Portugal's transition to more innovative, sustainable, and accessible mobility systems
Alstom has been present in Portugal for more three decades, and as a key player in Portugal's mobility sector, we have a proven commitment to industrial and technological local development, continuous innovating and pioneering in the railway sector. Some of our pioneering technologies in Portugal include: the first metro in Lisbon, first high-speed train between Lisbon and Porto, first tramway system in Porto and the first ATP signalling system for the Portuguese mainline network.
We are committed to support the transition to a more sustainable and smart mobility in Portugal. With our unique international experience, we propose the most innovative products and solutions to promote and develop the entire Portuguese railway sector.
A key player in Portugal's railways
Currently 2 out of 3 trains running in Portugal have been manufactured by Alstom or with Alstom technology. We are present in Portugal with high-speed trains (Alfa Pendular), regional trains, metro and tramways (Metro Porto). Over 1,500 km of Portuguese railway network and more than 500 onboard trains currently in service are managed by our Convel ATP system, a signalling solution developed specifically for the Portuguese market. Alstom has supplied the signalling system for Metro do Porto and manufactured the first 102 trains currently in operation on this network. We also supply the ATP system installed on board the 18 trains recently acquired by this operator.

Committed to local development
Alstom is a global company that becomes local for each of its projects. This is the case for Portugal, when we have opened an Innovation and Signalling site (in Maia, Porto) in 2022 and will develop a train manufacturing site in Matosinhos.
As a global leader with local roots, our industrial and technological strategy for the country is fully committed to industrial development in Portugal. At Alstom, we are committed to technology transfer, fostering long-term industrial relationships, developing skills, and creating employment opportunities.
Engineering and Innovation site in Maia
Inaugurated in 2022, Alstom’s engineering site in Maia (Porto district) develops cutting-edge solutions in the area of digital mobility and signalling, both for the Portuguese market and for Alstom's international projects around the world. Maia's facilities include signalling laboratories, engineering offices, a logistics warehouse, and a component repair area.
The Maia site is developing a new technological solution, Convel Dual, which integrates the European ERTMS signalling standards and the Convel technology, specifically designed for the Portuguese market, into the same on-track equipment.
