Despite a tough global economic environment, Alstom signed a large number of new contracts in 2011, particularly in emerging markets.
Among its many achievements, Alstom consolidated its position in the metro market in Latin America, including the Lima metro in Peru and the Los Teques metro in Venezuela, and intensified its signalling activities in Asia, where it supplied CBTC control systems to the metros in Taichung, Taiwan, and Shanghai and Kunming in China, among others.
Europes regional train services - particularly in France, in Germany and Sweden - and tramway systems, including the first Citadis Compact in Aubagne, southern France, and Citadis in Nottingham, central England, enjoyed healthy growth throughout the year.
The strategic partnership signed in 2010 with the Russian operator TMH also bore its first fruits in 2011, including the presentation of the first EP20 locomotive.
Finally, the last twelve months have been packed with events. New trainsets for the RER A rapid-transit train service in Paris were brought into service, along with a new very high-speed train, Euroduplex, on the Rhine-Rhône very high-speed line, for which Alstom also helped supply the signalling systems. Alstom also presented new trainsets for the Amsterdam metro and the AGV.italo train for Italys private rail operator, NTV.
