The prize was awarded in recognition of the progress made on
the London Underground's Northern Line - progress that had
already been recognised on 18 March with the Transport sector
partnership prize at the London Transport Awards.

The commitment of these three companies to improving fleet
availability, modernising infrastructure and optimising
operations over the past two years has resulted in the Northern
Line becoming the best performing line on the London
Underground. Delays have been reduced by 50% and average
journey times by one minute, and the line now boasts a 98%
regular service rate - as opposed to 90% in 2007.

The same event saw Alstom Transport, Virgin Trains, Network
Rail and Bechtel pick up the project of the year award for
improvements made to the West Coast Mainline. In the opinion of
the panel, the project had brought major benefits to the rail
industry. Alstom's involvement included preparing the Pendolino
fleet for Virgin's High-Frequency services which started in
December 2008.
