The battery is an autonomous on-board system that enables
the tramway to negotiate urban distances of less than 1
kilometre without overhead lines. Alstom has developed this
technology as a world first for the Nice Citadis tramway. The
absence of masts and overhead lines on Place Massena and Place
Garibaldi allows their historic character to be preserved.

This real-life test involving the crossing of Place Massena and
Place Garibaldi, which the inhabitants of Nice were able to
observe, was a preparatory step for trials to be conducted
under nominal operating conditions, to which the 20 trainsets
will be submitted over the entire length of the track in the
end of September. Entry into commercial service is planned for
November.

To date, almost 1,000 Citadis tramways have been ordered by 24
cities around the world (15 of them in France), including
Barcelona, Bordeaux, Dublin, Madrid, Paris and Melbourne.
Another 30 cities have a tramway project scheduled for the next
three years. Ten years after the entry into service of the
first Citadis, this modern type of tramway is enjoying great
success, as it makes it possible to develop sustainable
mobility, to rethink urban space, preserve architectural
heritage and contribute to city growth.
