ALSTOM has been awarded a contract, which is part of a total investment
of around 170 million euros by Tejo Energia, to supply systems to reduce
emissions of dust, NOx and SOx on two 300 MW coal fired units at its
Pego Power Plant, Portugal.

Tejo Energia is an Independent Power Producer (IPP) owned by European energy companies International Power (50%), Endesa (39%) and EDP (11%).

The new equipment is designed to reduce emissions of dust, nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide to well below emission levels required by the EUs Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD).

ALSTOMs scope of supply includes the upgrading of existing electrostatic precipitators, the supply of open spray tower flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) plants and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) plants for NOx removal.

The contracts will be executed by the respective technology centres in Italy and Sweden in consortium with ALSTOMs unit in Portugal. This contract follows recent similar orders received by ALSTOM for FGDs and SCRs in France, Lithuania and UK.

Pego power station, built in the 1990s, was purchased by the international consortium, Tejo Energia, in 1993. This was the first time that the private sector became involved in a significant portion of the Portuguese power generation market. Tejo Energia has since become a benchmark operator in the world-wide energy markets.

The project was officially launched today by Tejo Energia, at a ceremony at the plant attended by the Portuguese Secretary of State for Energy, Castro Guerra, and the Portuguese Secretary of State for the Environment, Humberto Rosa.

Philippe Joubert, President of ALSTOMs Power Turbo-systems/Power Environment Sectors, said: This contract is one of several we have won to bring plants into line with ever-tightening emissions regulations. ALSTOMs all-round capability and market leading position in emissions reduction is making us the partner of choice for power generators all over the world.
