ALSTOM has been awarded a contract by Fluor Daniel to supply a Seawater Flue Gas Desulfurization (SWFGD) system to the Saudi Aramco Mobil Refinery Ltd., in Yanbu, 300km north of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

The SWFGD system will cut sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions by up to 90% at a fluid catalytic cracker unit of the refinery, which is owned by Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco) and ExxonMobil Corporation.

ALSTOM will undertake conceptual and detail design, procurement, fabrication and delivery of the equipment while Fluor Daniel will erect the equipment with advice from ALSTOM.

ALSTOMs technology uses seawater as the absorbent to neutralise SO2. Seawater is alkaline by nature, and has a substantial capacity to absorb acidic SO2 gas and transform it into sulfate, which is a natural component of seawater. The process does not require the addition of any chemicals; only seawater and air are used. In addition, no solids are formed in the process, and hence there are no land disposal issues, nor scaling in the process equipment.

Fluor Daniel is a division of Fluor Corporation, one of the world's largest engineering, procurement and construction companies. Its expertise encompasses project management, construction, operations and maintenance and other services based on more than 300 fossil-fuelled generation units.
