The
Stockholm transport authorities, AB
Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL), have ordered 16 new commuter trains of type
Coradia Lirex (X60) worth about 120 million euros Five out of the 16 trains are
conditioned upon the approval by the Stockholm
county council.

The trains will be delivered between September 2007 and April 2008. This order
corresponds to an option included in the initial contract for 55 commuter
trains signed in 2002. The new order brings the number of Coradia Lirex (X60)
trains to be manufactured by ALSTOMs site in Salzgitter, Germany,
for SL, to 71. A total of 20 trains have been delivered to Sweden and 15
of them are in traffic.

The trains have been in service since August 2005. The trains are designed and
tested for Nordic winter conditions. The first winter of these trains in
passenger service in harsh winter conditions has gone extremely well.

What is unique with Coradia Lirex (X60) trains is the fact that all of the
technically most essential equipment have been placed on the train roof.
Placing the equipment on the roof enables the low floor construction of the
train and protects the equipment against ice and snow on the tracks. This
improves the train reliability and availability. The roof-mounted equipment
also facilitates easy service.

The train length, 107 metres, makes it the longest commuter train in the world.
It offers space for more than 900 passengers and runs up to 160 km/h. The train
has excellent acceleration and braking performances.

The commuter trains are recyclable up to 95 percent. The train also feeds the
energy,  generated with electric braking back to the network. Due to the
above characteristics the trains are very energy effective.
