ALSTOM has been awarded the contract by Vattenfall to build the steam generator for the first carbon-free demonstration plant in the world utilising oxygen combustion technology. With an order volume of about 17 million Euro, the 30 MWt demonstration plant will be located at Schwarze Pumpe, in Brandenburg, Germany. The new plant, which will burn lignite, is scheduled to enter commercial operation in 2008.  Oxygen combustion (also known as oxyfuel firing or oxyfiring) is a new technology that burns coal or any fossil fuel in oxygen, rather than air. It produces a flue gas of concentrated carbon dioxide (CO2), which can be captured and sequestered, preventing it from entering the atmosphere.   Oxyfuel firing is one of several promising combustion-based technologies to generate carbon-free power from fossil fuels. In addition to oxyfuel firing for pulverised coal and fluidised bed boiler designs, ALSTOM is actively developing advanced post combustion capture and advanced conversion using chemical looping technology. This portfolio of technology options will provide power generators with solutions to meet specific fuel, site and operating requirements.  In operation since 1997 at Schwarze Pumpe are 2 x 800 MWe supercritical boilers also supplied by ALSTOM. At the time, these were the first brown coal-fired supercritical steam generators in the world.Should you have any media inquiries about this press release, do not hesitate to contact our team.
