By equipping Corail railcars with push-pull cabs, the SNCF
wishes to reduce station shunting to a minimum for Corail
trainsets, thus allowing the number of regional services to be
increased in Alsace, Franche-Comté, Bourgogne and
Provence-Alpes-Côte dAzur. The RevCo driving cab at
the other end of the trainset suppresses the need for a second
locomotive in all cases where operation requires turnback, such
as in terminal stations.

The renovation of Corail coaches is shared between the EIMM
(Etablissement industriel de maintenance du matériel)
workshop of the SNCF in Romilly and the ALSTOM Transport
facility in Reichshoffen. The EIMM in Romilly is responsible for
removing acoustic insulation from the coach area to be modified
while the Reichshoffen facility receives, dismantles and
transforms the coach in its workshops. The installation of
equipment in the driving cab, the nose and two passenger access
doors and operational tests are performed in Reichshoffen. The
transformed coaches are then sent back to the EIMM in Romilly
where they are fully lined and painted.

The Corail coach is equipped with a driving cab fitted with
a passive safety device that can absorb the energy of a 54 kmph
shock against a 85 ton railcar (reference scenario compliant
with international standards).

After field testing managed by the SNCF, the first coach
will start revenue service in early February 2007. The last
"Réversibilité Corail" coach produced will leave the
Reichshoffen facility by January 2008.
