Alstom sets up shop in Waterloo to talk London projects, jobs and skills

Alstom is taking to the concourse at Waterloo Station to talk to commuters about its involvement
in the city's future, while also trying to find some of the 200 London-based engineers it needs to employ in the next two years.

The company is joining forces with South West Trains and Network Rail on August 7 to offer passengers the chance to find out more about how the company is helping to keep Londons transport on the move, and also how it helps keeps the country's lights on through its power generation and electrical grid activities.

In fact, Waterloo passengers using the Northern, Jubilee or Bakerloo Lines will be riding on Alstom trains, with the company having supplied roughly half the trains in operation on the Underground today. Alstom also maintains the 106 trains that serve the Northern Line and has helped make South West Train's Class 458s into the one of the most reliable fleets in Britain.

Going forward, Alstom, with partners, has just been awarded one of Crossrail's largest contracts, for tunnel fit-out, and two further contracts for power supplies.

Such success also means that the company is on the lookout for new talent, with 600 roles currently available across the country, and an expected 200 London-based engineers required over the next two years. An important part of that mix will be Alstom's new drive for graduates and apprentices.

Terence Watson, Alstom UK President, said: "This event gives us the chance to meet people who use our trains every day, to tell them a little more about our company and to see if we can find people who want to take a career journey with Alstom.

"With contracts to overhaul and maintain the Northern Line fleet at centres in Golders Green and Morden, together with daily maintenance of the Pendolinos that run on the West Coast Main Line at our Wembley Traincare Centre, alongside projects to modernize commuter fleets, we're vital to the process of taking people to work and home in and around London every day. Now add to that mix the contracts we've won with Crossrail and you get an idea of just why were proud to be involved so deeply in the story of making life better for London's citizens.

Alstom's stand will be in the concourse at Waterloo Station from 0630-1930 on August 7, with South West Trains using the same display for its 'Meet the Manager' event the day before.

In the UK, Alstom has a turnover of around £1bn and employs 6,500 people at more than 30 sites across the country. It is £22bn worldwide. It has built around half of the UK's power stations, including four of the most modern gas-fired facilities, around a third of the trains on the railway today and operates the only high voltage transformer manufacture site in the country.

Alstom is heavily involved in developing clean power solutions such as the next generation of large offshore wind and tidal power devices.
